Using Two Monitors with an iMac

Having two monitors connected to one computer is better than having only one! It gives you a bigger desktop, letting you see more at once, and therefore making you more productive. Since I used only a Mac mini for about one year, I was unable to use two monitors. The latest Mac minis have two video outputs, but mine does not. But when I got my iMac, you may remember the live unboxing I did, I couldn’t wait to connect a second monitor.

I originally bought an adapter (mini DVI to VGA) from the Amazon Market place. It didn’t work. Neither did a replacement that they sent me. Having wasted a lot of time trying to get a refund, I wasn’t in the mood for potentially going through that trouble again, so I decided to just buy one from Apple, despite the ridiculously high price. It arrived quickly, and of course, worked straight away. Setting it up was simple, all I was required to do was plug the VGA cable from the second monitor into one end of the adapter, and then connect it to my iMac. Once it was in, it just worked! No settings to configure, no software to install, no resolution to set. That’s what I love about Apple products. You can do the same with Windows, and it usually is just as easy, so maybe this isn’t the best example of a Macs ease of use.

Anyway, I now have three monitors in total. I’m counting the iMac as the first one, a Philips monitor to the right as the second one, and the third one is an old CRT monitor that is connected to my Mac mini.
