Upek Eikon Finger Print Reader Unboxing and Review

Pros:
Very small
Looks good
Saves you typing your password repeatedly

Cons:
Limited functionality within OS X

Rating: 3/5

I got the Upek Eikon Fingerprint reader for Christmas (2008). My parent got it from Amazon.co.uk! I knew it was compatible with both Windows and Mac OS X, however I was unsure of what it would allow me to do. After unboxing it, I quickly became aware that it didn’t really do much within OS X. I wasn’t too disappointed though, because the small size and stylish design of the device make up for this.

The fingerprint reader conects to either your PC or Mac via USB, and, even if it is useless, it does looks cool and will impress any fellow geek. Within OS X, you can use it to log on (and unlock keychain at the same time), unlock System Preferences pains and instead of typing your password when software installations require you to. That’s the only uses I’ve found so far, however in Windows you can assign each finger to a certain program so when you swipe that particular finger, that program will open. It sound really cool and useful, I just wish I could do it on my Mac too.

I’m glad I got the Upek Eikon Fingerprint Scanner because it looks good and saves me from typing my password as often, I’m just slightly displeased by the fact that it does more in Windows than it does in OS X.
