As a viewer you probably know that I haven’t been recording many videos lately. The reason for this is because I’ve filled up my hard drive. My Mac mini has an 80GB HDD which is very small, and I’ve managed to use 79GB of it. I have been unable to save videos to it, and recently, it has been in an unusable state as there is not enough hard drive space for virtual memory.
To solve this problem, I bought an external hard drive. I chose a FREECOM HDD Classic with a massive 500GB of space. Enough for all of my music, pictures and videos, along with all of my other documents I’ve collected from the last 5 years. It is a USB HDD, with no other interface. I picked this hard drive because it claims to work with both Macs and PCs, so if it doesn’t I can take it back and complain. Also, this was the best value I could find for my money, costing only £70. For anyone who is interested, the speed is 7200rpm.
So far, I am very pleased with the hard drive. It’s extremely quiet as it contains no fan. It’s fast, and it looks good too. I partitioned the hard drive as the FAT32 format was unsuitable for my needs because of the file size limit. I formatted one partition in the Mac OS Extended format (I will use this partition for my normal documents, photos, music, etc…) and the other in the NTFS (New Technology File System) format. This partition is used for large video files which I edit on a Windows machine using Pinnacle Studio and therefore do not need to be backed up by Time Machine. The only fault I can find with this hard drive is the physical size of it (it’s a bit big). This does not bother me though, as it sits on a shelf where it cannot be seen. Overall, it is a brilliant addition to my setup.
