Crushing the Blacks

To ‘Crush The Blacks’ is a phrase used in video editing meaning to darken the black areas of the picture. You’re probably thinking I made a mistake there aren’t you? How can you make black parts darker? Well, it means to make the dark areas (dark greys, shadows, etc.) pure black. This removes detail in darker areas of the picture. This can be achieved in more expensive video editing packages, so if your using Windows Movie Maker to edit, then you’re not going to be able to try this.

Using either a color adjustment tool or even a color correction tool, you can reduce the black in the video. This, along with increasing saturation, and, if necessary, slightly increasing the brightness, can give you’re video a film look and add more color to the scene.

This is just one style you can use with your video so experiment to try and come up with your own.
